What is Dengue Fever?

Symptoms typically appear 4-10 days after being bitten by an infected mosquito and can include:
- High fever (104°F or higher)
- Severe headache
- Pain behind the eyes
- Muscle and joint pain

Orange County Mosquito Services Warns Residents
Orange County Mosquito Services (OCMS) has detected dengue fever in mosquitoes collected in the county.
OCMS is urging residents to take precautions to avoid mosquito bites and prevent the spread of the disease.
How to Avoid Mosquito Bites
To avoid mosquito bites, OCMS recommends the following:
- Wear long sleeves and pants when outdoors, especially during dawn and dusk when mosquitoes are most active.
- Use insect repellent containing DEET, picaridin, or oil of lemon eucalyptus.
- Eliminate standing water around your home, where mosquitoes can breed.
- Install or repair screens on windows and doors.
- Use mosquito nets when sleeping.
What to Do if You Suspect You Have Dengue Fever
If you suspect you have dengue fever, see a doctor immediately.
Treatment for dengue fever typically involves rest, fluids, and pain relievers.
In severe cases, hospitalization may be necessary.
